Candle Questions

What kind of wax do you use?

We use coconut beeswax for our container candles and coconut wax for our wax melts.

We use coconut wax because it burns and melts cleanly, is non-toxic and natural, has a strong scent throw, and is environmentally sustainable. We also love how creamy, smooth, and luxury feel it is.

We also add beeswax to our candles so they burn slower and last longer. Beeswax is natural, non-toxic, and sustainable. The beeswax we use is cruelty free and leaping bunny certified.

All of our wax is:

  • Gluten-free, toxin-free, paraben-free, and phthalate-free
  • Cruelty-free - Leaping Bunny Certified

Additionally, our wax melts are vegan.

Did you know? Most big candle brands use 100% paraffin wax, or a "soy blend" of 50% paraffin and 50% soy wax. Paraffin wax is a petroleum by-product that has been shown to release dangerous chemicals, such as carcinogenic benzene and toluene into the air.

What kind of fragrence do you use?

We use a blend of non-toxic, premium fragrance oils and all-natural essential oils.

Every single fragrance oil we use is is formulated without phthalates and made without ingredients found on California’s Proposition 65 list.

We also go a step further than most candle companies by also avoiding these 5 main hazard groups.

✖ Carcinogens: These are materials known or thought to cause cancer.

✖ Mutagens: Materials that change the DNA of a cell, harming the cell and causing diseases like cancer.

✖ Reproductive toxins: Toxins that adversely affect reproductive organs and increase the risk of birth defects.

✖ Organ toxins: These are toxins that can cause adverse effects or disease within specific bodily organs.

✖ Acute toxins: Toxins that can cause adverse effects from a single exposure. Generally, this would be accidental exposure like spillage or ingestion.

What kind of jars do you use?

We use 50% recylced glass jars from a local woman-owned glass company here in Austin, Texas. For our lids, we use sustainably harvested cork from Portugal.

What kind of wick do you use?

We use crackling wooden wicks which make a soothing crackling sound when lit that mimics the cozy ambiance of a fireplace. They are exclusively crafted from all-natural, untreated wood native to the USA, making them completely free from metals, toxins, animal products, and animal testing. Our wooden wicks are made with wood from Forest-Stewardship Council (FSC) approved mills, ensuring the highest standards in ethical and environmentally friendly milling practices.

Recycling Questions

How do I dispose / recycle the shipping box & packaging peanuts?

  • Recycle the cardboard shipping box, brown kraft honeycomb paper, the water-activated paper tape, and paper inserts.
  • Dissolve the biodegradable packing peanuts in water. They are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and made out of corn starch.

How do I recycle / upcycle of the candle jar?

  • Recycle or reuse the glass candle jar after cleaning it
  • Reuse or compost the cork lid after cleaning it

See the cleaning instructions in the question below.

Did you know? Our candle jars are made of 50% recycled glass, and they can also be recycled again. Glass can be recycled endlessly with no loss in quality or purity. However, if you are able to repurpose or reuse the glass, that is even better!

What can I upcycle the candle jar to?

Our glass jars were specifically chosen with upcycling in mind! After thoroughly cleaning them, they are food safe. They are also dishwasher safe. They work great for storing tea, herbs, spices, beans, grains, sugar, salt, and non-food items like paper clips, cotton balls, q-tips, matches, and more! You can plant a succulent in them or use them to store your wax melts!

See the cleaning instructions in the question below.

How do I clean the candle jar and cork?

To prepare the glass for upcycling, remove and dispose the stickers. Heat a pot with 2 inches high of water to almost boiling and reduce heat. Lower the glass into the water carefully without burning your fingers. Once the wax is melted, around 8 minutes, take it out carefully (lift from the top edges of glass where it is cooler) and set it on a heat-resistant surface to cool. Once the glass is cool enough to hold, usually after a few minutes, dispose of the melted wax in the trash (or pour it in your wax melter to re-use it as a wax melt later!) Dispose of the remaining wick, wick holder, and wick sticker. Clean the jar with a dry paper towel to get rid of any large pieces of remaining wax. Dispose any wax in the trash and not the sink! Then take a paper towel soaked in warm soapy water and scrub inside and out to remove the rest of the wax and any sticker gunk. Finally, dry with another paper towel. Wash the cork with warm soapy water. Don't soak it. Allow jar and cork to dry completely before use.

If you plan on re-using the jar for food, we recommend additionally putting it in the dishwasher or boiling it in water for a few minutes to better clean & sanitize it. Our clear glass jars are dishwasher-safe and our corks are handwash only. If you'd like to request a new cork with your next order, please email us at care@moonwax.shop.
